Bishop Anthony Fisher OP

Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, Coordinator World Youth Day 2008

Episcopal Vicar for Life and Health, Parish Priest of Watsons Bay

Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, DD, BA (Hons), LLB, BTheol (Hons), DPhil, is a friar of the Order of Preachers ('Dominicans') and Titular Bishop of Buruni. He was born in 1960 and is the youngest Catholic bishop in Australia.

Bishop Fisher is presently the Parish Priest of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Watson's Bay.

He studied in the University of Sydney for six years, where he received an honours degree in History and a Law degree before practicing law in a city firm in Sydney. From this time he was also involved in various pro-life groups.

In 1985 he entered the Dominicans - a religious order dedicated to preaching the Catholic faith in the context of a life of study, prayer and community. He studied for the priesthood in Melbourne, receiving an honours degree in theology. He worked for a time at Uniya, a centre for social research in Kings Cross, on immigration and refugee issues, and at Holy Name Parish in Wahroonga, Sydney. He was ordained a priest in Sydney on 14 September 1991.

Bishop Fisher undertook doctoral studies in bioethics at the University of Oxford until 1995. His D.Phil. was granted for a thesis on Justice in the Allocation of Healthcare. His academic life included lecturing overseas and throughout Australia, as well as publishing many books and articles on bioethics and morality. From 1995 to 2000 he was a lecturer in the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne.

From 2000 to 2003 he was foundation director of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family - a post-graduate pontifical institute with nine campuses around the world. The principal work of the Institute is in teaching and research at the cutting edge of questions concerning respect for human life and the dignity of the person, and support for marriage and family life. Bishop Fisher is still a Professor of Bioethics and Moral Theology in the Institute. He is also Deputy-Chancellor of the Catholic Institute of Sydney and a member of Faculty.

In the Sydney Church he is now Episcopal Vicar for Life and Health. In the wider Church Bishop Fisher is a member of the Australian Bishops' Committee for Doctrine and Morals and the Pontifical Academy for Life.

His community involvement includes being Chaplain to the Parliament of Victoria, a member of the Infertility Treatment Authority of Victoria, chair or member of several hospital ethics committees, and a chaplain to various organisations such as the Order of Malta. He has also had various engagements in parish life and the pastoral care of the handicapped and the dying.

 

Danny Casey

Chief Operating Officer, World Youth Day 2008

Danny has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Economics from Macquarie University. He is also a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA).

Danny started his career with EnergyAustralia in 1977 as a commercial trainee. He has held various accounting and management roles with organisations including Ernst & Young, Lend Lease and Middletons, a commercial law firm in Sydney.

Danny joined the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney in early 2003 as Business Manager and is responsible for the administration and financial affairs of the Archdiocese.

Since joining, Danny has worked closely on the Archdiocese's bid to host World Youth Day in Sydney in 2008. Following the success of the Archdiocese's bid, Danny has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of WYD 2008, the company established to organise this enormous event.

 

Steve Lawrence

Director, Evangelisation and Catechesis

Steve joined the WYD08 executive team in late 2005. He has worked extensively with young people, holding leadership positions in youth ministry, university chaplaincy and relationships and sexuality education in both Melbourne and Sydney.

Steve was Director of Emmanuel School of Mission in Rome for three years and has been responsible for four pilgrimage groups to World Youth Days - including an international group representing 17 nationalities - and has vast experience in spiritual formation, running missions, evangelisation activities and catechetical programs.

As well as playing professional AFL football, Steve has degrees in Humanities and Theology, and a Diploma in teaching. Married with six children, Steve recently finished up at the University of Sydney Catholic Chaplaincy to take up his role as Director of Evangelisation and Catechesis for WYD08.

 

Rev Peter G. Williams

Director, Liturgy

Fr Peter Williams was born in Melbourne and educated at the Ivanhoe Grammar School.

At the conclusion of his secondary schooling he studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Australian National University in Canberra where he majored in Medieval Studies.

In 1976 he entered St John's Theological College in Morpeth, NSW and trained for the Anglican ministry completing both a Diploma in Ministry and a Bachelor of Theology.

Between 1979 and 1989 he served in various parishes and ministries in the Anglican Dioceses of Canberra-Goulburn and Wangaratta. During that time he completed a Bachelor of Education from La Trobe University.

In 1990 he was received into the Catholic Church and in 1992 was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Parramatta. He served in the parishes of Marayong and Penrith.

In Penrith he completed a Master of Theology degree at the University of Sydney. From 1994-1997 he studied liturgy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.

Upon returning to Australia he was appointed Director of Liturgy in the Diocese of Parramatta and Parish Priest of Harris Park.

In 2000 he was appointed Executive Secretary of the National Liturgical Commission.

In 2004 he was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Parramatta until August 2006 when he was appointed Director of Liturgy for World Youth Day 2008.

Fr Williams teaches liturgy at the Catholic Institute of Sydney and the Seminary of the Good Shepherd in Homebush. He is a fervent lap swimmer and enjoys cinema. He is also noted as an organist and church musician. He is priest-in-residence in the parish of Granville in the Diocese of Parramatta.

 

Geoff Morris

Director, Pilgrim Services, World Youth Day 2008

Geoff joined the WYD08 team in late 2005 and is responsible for services for pilgrims including registration, accommodation, catering and transport.

Prior to joining WYD08, Geoff worked for many years in state government agencies in the areas of information technology, personnel and as the General Manager Retail for Sydney Water. For the past eight years, he has been working in the private sector, primarily delivering and managing large scale information and business improvement projects for organisations such as Medibank Private, NSW TAB (now Tabcorp) HCF Health Funds and the Commonwealth Bank.

He has also advised NSW state agencies such as State Water Corporation, Catchment Management Trusts and the Department of Primary Industry in strategic planning and risk management.

Geoff holds a Bachelor of Economics, a Graduate Diploma in Administration and Management and a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

 

Jim Hanna

Director, Communications, World Youth Day 2008

Jim Hanna has been Director of Communications for World Youth Day 2008 since September 2006.

Jim was previously Senior Media Adviser to a NSW Government Minister for almost three years, handling issues in the portfolios of roads, housing, police, energy and utilities.

Prior to this, he worked as a journalist for over 15 years in Sydney and Canberra for AAP, ABC Radio and SBS Radio covering politics, economics, finance, business and sport.

Jim has a Communications degree from the University of Technology, Sydney and a Certificate from the Securities Institute.

 

Ian Steigrad

Director, Event Planning & Operations

Ian Steigrad has extensive experience in major event management.

He is a Director of Epic Attractions, a company that specialises in the presentation of large scale public events in Sydney, and has worked for The City of Sydney, Sydney Cove Authority and SOCOG. He was the Major Events Operations Manager for Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority during the Millennium New Year's Eve Celebrations and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Ian consults to the NSW Premiers Department on crowd management and Government coordination for major Sydney events and is the Producer of the Glebe Street Fair - Sydney's oldest street fair. He has consulted on the development of the Show-ring Markets at Fox Studios, the Aroma Coffee Festival and Markets by Moonlight in the Rocks.

Ian holds a Bachelor of Dramatic Art (in Technical Production) from NIDA and an MBA. He is a past Chair of the Festivals and Events Association and has taught event management at UTS, APM institute and Kenvale College in Sydney.

 

John Moore

Director, Business Partnerships

John Moore is a recognised specialist in consumer and brand marketing. His career highlights include Head of Marketing for the highly successful Sydney 2000 Olympic Games where he was responsible for the image and identity of the Games, the marketing and sponsorship programs, and created new benchmarks for retailing and merchandise - The Sydney 2000 Olympic Stores.

Prior to this, John spent seven years with Warner Bros Consumer Products as Vice President, Asia Pacific and also 10 years in New York with marketing and communications businesses.

After the Olympics, John ran the Asia Pacific division of The Nuance Group, one of the world's largest travel and airport retailers. He was also Deputy Chairman of the TTF Board and has had a long and successful association with the tourism industry.

John joined Global Brands in 2005 in a welcome return to the big event brand marketing and retailing world. Global Brands is the exclusive retail and licensing partner of FIFA as well as other leading international brands and events. He is also currently Managing Director of Global Brands Group, Australasia.
