Church Recognised Organisations

It is a tremendous privilege to host World Youth Day 2008, and with this honour comes an important obligation to spread the word to all Pilgrims within Australia and around the world about the event and what it will mean to all those who participate.

Given the significance and scale of the event, the World Youth Day 2008 Local Organising Committee wishes to ensure the appropriate use and representation of the WYD08 logo.

For approval purposes, there are two types of logo use:

A different approval form is required for each type of use so it is important to understand the difference between them.

Church Communications

We openly and enthusiastically encourage spreading the WYD08 word to as many people as possible, so all church-recognised organisations will be permitted to use the logo free of charge for promoting or supporting WYD08, provided that the use does not result in any commercial benefit to the organisation either directly or indirectly.

A formal approval from WYD08 will be necessary in all cases, and it is a condition of our approval that the the WYD08 Logo Rules of Use and Logo Policy be observed.

How can you use the WYD08 logo to spread the word?

Some examples of Church Communications Use that we would generally approve include:

  • Reproducing the logo on the website of an Archdiocese or Diocese to indicate a link to the WYD08 website (see www.sydney.catholic.org.au/home.shtml)
  • A Parish displaying the logo on a flyer and/or church message board to communicate an occasion such as a WYD08 prayer night
  • A Diocese applying the logo to an invitation regarding attendance at a conference where representatives from WYD08 will be making an address
  • A church hall flying a flag displaying the WYD08 logo (provided the flag has been obtained through an approved supplier)
  • Applying the logo to a church owned motor vehicle or bus to help promote the event
  • A Parish giving away WYD08 logo T-shirts to parish youth workers involved in WYD08 related activities (provided the T-shirts have been obtained in accordance with our WYD08 Logo Rules of Use )

We have created a set of Website & Stationery Guidelines and developed a list of helpful DOs and DON'Ts to assist dioceses and Church-recognised organisations develop websites and stationery in preparation for WYD08.

If you are preparing to produce any merchandise (eg banners, flags, t-shirts, candles etc) please refer to our Merchandise Policy .

To obtain our approval, you will need to submit a Church Communications Request for Approval form.

Church Fundraising

Church Recognised Organisations may be permitted to use the logo for revenue generation (fundraising) purposes, but permission will only be granted if the funds raised are to be used for the purposes of promoting and/or otherwise supporting WYD08.

A formal approval from WYD08 will be necessary where any Church Recognised Organisation wishes to:

  • Purchase WYD08 merchandise at reduced rates for the purpose of raising funds to support WYD08 (for this you will need a WYD08 Fundraiser Code )
  • Use the logo in some way connected with raising funds for WYD08 which does not involve the purchase of merchandise.

To obtain our approval, you will need to submit a Church Fundraiser Request for Approval form .

You do not need our approval if you wish to undertake fundraising without any use of the logo or of WYD08 fundraising merchandise.

Some examples of Church Fundraising that we would generally approve the use of the logo for include:

  • The sale of WYD08 merchandise such as T-shirts, caps, pens etc at a parish fete to raise funds to support an overseas Pilgrim attending WYD08 (provided the merchandise has been obtained through an approved WYD08 supplier licensee). For more information see Merchandise
  • The application of the logo to raffle tickets, which are then sold to pay for parish youth to attend WYD08
  • The application of the logo to tickets or promotional materials for a fundraising dinner/play/concert, the proceeds of which are used to sponsor a pilgrim from a less advantaged country

Examples of other Church Fundraising that we need to consider more carefully because of our business partner relationships include:

  • Using the logo on a flyer which mentions a corporate entity e.g WYD08 pizza night sponsored by a national pizza chain
  • Promoting a WYD08 raffle or auction featuring a holiday, travel or cash prize supported by an airline, travel agency or local financial institution

We have created a set of Fundraising Guidelines to assist dioceses and Church-recognised organisations in their fundraising activities with local businesses in preparation for WYD08.

Note: Each approval given is specific to the activities listed on the form submitted so please submit a new form if new activities are proposed.
